In 2011, my mother, brother, and I went to Disneyland with a group of friends, and on the trip we attended a church in Anaheim. At this particular congregation, the morning service was followed by a potluck, and then a more casual study-like sermon. That afternoon, the pastor was preaching on the resurrection of the body. After that sermon, Mom decided she wanted to be buried.
Up to that point, Mom planned to be cremated. Not because she specifically wanted her ashes spread, or anything. She just didn’t really care either way, so might as well save some money.
For centuries, the church has practiced burial, but I always wondered why. What’s the big deal? If you believe the soul leaves the body upon death, does it matter what happens to the body?
